Tons of awesome craft beers from across the country are making their way to Creekside Beer this week! Breweries like Old Nation from Michigan, Industrial Arts from New York, Drake’s from California, Pipeworks from Illinois, and Lawson’s Finest Liquids from Vermont will be in the Pittsburgh area (and on our shelves) for the first time ever. We’ll have a biweekly, rotating selection of out-of-state NEIPAs, sessions, stouts, sours, and more for you to enjoy! This week’s offerings include:
Drake’s Hopocalypse New England IPA
Industrial Arts Wrench New England IPA
Lawson’s Sip of Sunshine DIPA
Old Nation Boss Tweed DIPA
Old Nation M-43 New England IPA
Pipeworks Ninja vs. Unicorn DIPA
Pipeworks Pothole City Imperial Stout
Let’s focus in on a few of these awesome brews! Pipeworks Brewing Pothole City is a deep, dark, rich imperial stout.
Direct from the brewery, “This Chicago Rocky Road Imperial Stout from Pipeworks features notes of marshmallow, vanilla, cacao nibs, lactose, and almond. It’s thick, rich, roasty, and is the perfect dessert brew!” It clocks in at 10.5% ABV. At time of writing, this brew clocks in at 4.16/5 on Untappd. But what do I think of this beer?
Look: This beer pours a beautiful, pitch black color with minimal, quickly dissipating head.
Smell: Notes of almond and marshmallow are most prevalent, though chocolate is quite involved as well.
Taste: Wow, what a brew! It’s sweet, rich, but has just the right amount of boozy warmth to balance it out. Marshmallow, chocolate, and vanilla are present throughout. Tastes almost like an adult s’more!
Thoughts: Anyone I’ve talked beer with knows how much I love stouts, so I’m a bit biased here. But this is one of the best beers I’ve tried recently! Perfect for a cold night…or a warm night… Any time, really!

And now, the most sought after of all the new, out-of-state beers: Lawson’s Sip of Sunshine DIPA.
The brewer states, “This lupulin-laden India Pale Ale is packed with juicy tropical fruit character, bright floral aromas and delectable layers of hop flavor. Pour mindfully, inhale deeply and enjoy a tropical vacation in a glass.” It sits at 8.0% ABV and 65 IBUs. At time of writing, Sip of Sunshine sits at 4.36/5 on Untappd!
Now, my takeaways:
Look: Not nearly as hazy as I was expecting. Pours a clear, golden yellow color with moderate head.
Smell: Heavy on the citrus fruit aromas, especially lemon. Quite tropical.
Taste: A very tasty brew indeed! It features lots of mango, pineapple, and citrus. Not overly bitter, but there is some bitterness, especially on the finish.
Thoughts: A terrific IPA, though I’m surprised it receives as much acclaim as it does. Not at all to say I won’t be buying it again soon, but I’ve heard stories of people driving to Vermont for Sip of Sunshine before Lawson’s expanded their distribution. Still, certainly worth a try! If you like Southern Tier’s 2XIPA or Old Nation Boss Tweed, you’ll certainly enjoy Lawson’s Sip of Sunshine
