Eleventh Hour’s Hour Series Continues With “Hour IV”

If you’ve been following the Pittsburgh beer scene over the past few months, you’ve likely tried (or at least heard of) Eleventh Hour’s ambitious new series of IPAs: the Hour Series. For the uninitiated, Eleventh Hour, based out of the Lawrenceville neighborhood and established in 2017, started with a simple, Citra-hopped New England IPA and have added a hop to each monthly release since then. That’s right, this series will culminate with a monster, 12-hop brew released at the end of 2020. The mind races with the possibilities of where this genius idea could take us.

Now about the beer itself. Hour II added Mosaic, Hour III got interesting by adding the relatively unknown Kohatu hop, and last Friday, Eleventh Hour released Hour IV, which brought Simcoe to the mix. Let’s hear what the brewery has to say about this latest release: “With the addition of another West Coast favorite, Simcoe, we get a different type of addition to the Hour Series. Simcoe brings in berries and mango to add to the passionfruit, orange zest, blueberries and grapefruit. A pungent nose, giving way to a candy like taste profile outlining this awesome hop combo. Keeping the same malt base gives you the fluffy mouthfeel and soft profile you have come to expect from the Hour Series.” At time of writing, this brew sits at a 4.26/5 on Untappd.

Now that we’ve heard what the brewery has to say about this new brew, what do I personally think?

  • Look: This brew pours a beautiful, hazy orange color. It has just the right amount of head and looks quite inviting!

  • Smell: Notes of citrusy fruits and a bit of blueberry aroma as well.

  • Taste: This brew is amazingly flavorful! The tropical fruits are the first thing that I tasted, followed shortly by the distinct, slight bitterness that was prevalent in Hour III as well. Despite this touch of bitterness, the brew is still very smooth, drinkable, and tasty.

  • Thoughts: Overall, this brew is very comparable to Hour III in terms of quality. There’s definitely some new flavors going on, thanks to the addition of Simcoe, but it doesn’t take it to a much higher level than its predecessor. However, the bar was already pretty high, so that’s not a bad thing! If you like other juicy, soft, New England-style IPAs such as Grist House Hazedelic Juice Grenade or Four Points Fourth Street IPA, you’ll love this one!

Tyler's Rating: 4.25/5
